When should you see a Dietitian or Nutritionist?

What Does a Dietitian Do?

Dietitians are qualified experts in food and nutrition, helping individuals achieve their health and dietary goals. They hold a university degree in nutrition and dietetics and meet the rigorous accreditation standards set by Dietitians Australia as Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs).

Whether you have specific dietary needs due to medical conditions like diabetes or food allergies, or simply want to improve your overall health, a dietitian can provide expert guidance tailored to your lifestyle. Some consultations may be covered by Medicare or private health insurance, reducing out-of-pocket costs.

When Should You See a Dietitian?
You might benefit from seeing a dietitian if you are managing a chronic health condition, such as:

-High cholesterol or diabetes
-Cancer
-Kidney, gastrointestinal, or heart disease
-Malnutrition
-Eating disorders
-Overweight or obesity
-Food allergies or intolerances
-Dietitians also support individuals at different life stages, including:

-Infancy and childhood
-Pregnancy
-Menopause
-Ageing

What to Expect During a Dietitian Appointment
During this session, the dietitian will take the time to understand your:

-Medical history
-Eating habits and lifestyle
-Health and nutrition goals
-You may be asked to complete a food diary or questionnaire before or after your visit. The dietitian will assess how your current diet affects your health and provide tailored recommendations. This might include meal planning, grocery shopping tips, or lifestyle adjustments to support long-term well-being.

-Follow-up appointments are often recommended to track progress, refine your plan, and address any challenges. Feel free to ask questions and share concerns—your dietitian is there to guide and support you every step of the way.
